Here is a blast wheel that was damaged beyond repair from using a third party extra hard media, after only 106 hours.
A third party media provider claimed our client could save money and have shorter blasting times, (Their media is not approved for our 702T dual wheel blast machine). Their extra hard blast media may shorten blasting times depending on your application, but using an extremely hardened media to strip and prep material faster has it’s own issues…
… there are costs associated with saving a minute on your blast time. As you can see below, the extra hard media wore through the hardened wheel blades in only 106 hours – 450 hours normal. This third party media also wore through the side of the side armor also which has a normal lifespan of 700 hours. This is why Guyson specifies the type and style of media for every machine that we build. The damage to this wheel made it irreparable, not only wearing through the blades, but the outer wheel housing and braces that hold the blade in place.
This creates extreme danger is several ways. Blade parts can break off and damage your part on impact, or throw media in a different direction making the effectiveness of your machine decline over time. This can actually extend your blast time as you use use third party media.
